Most crypto trading runs fine on Linux — Python bots, CLI tools, headless strategies. This page is for the other case: your tool is Windows-only. A charting suite that never shipped for Linux, a broker's desktop terminal, a GUI bot, an Excel-based model with a live data add-in. For those, you want a real Windows desktop that's always on — and that's a Windows VPS over RDP.
When Windows is the right call (and when it isn't)
Be honest about your stack before you pay:
- Linux-native — a Python or Node.js bot, a CCXT script, anything headless? Take a cheaper Linux plan. You don't need Windows and you'll pay less.
- Windows-only — a platform with no Linux build, a GUI you have to see, a Windows-only add-in? That's this. A full Windows Server 2022 desktop you reach over RDP.
No shame in either; the point is to not pay for Windows if your tools don't need it.
The setup
A trading terminal or bot only talks outbound to the exchange, so you don't need a dedicated IP — a NAT plan is exactly right and cheaper.
- Windows-Small — $11/mo (4 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 50 GB NVMe). A terminal or a GUI bot with headroom. The default.
- Windows-Medium — $19/mo (6 vCPU, 6 GB RAM, 60 GB NVMe). Several apps at once, or a heavy charting package.
Both have a 150 Mbit/s port and unmetered traffic. Deploy, connect over RDP as Administrator, activate Windows with your own key (BYOL — slmgr /ipk then slmgr /ato), and install your platform.
Keep it running through reboots
The value of a VPS is that it doesn't stop when you do. Make sure your software survives a Windows reboot by starting it automatically at logon — the scheduled-task recipe in the Forex VPS guide works for any Windows program, not just MetaTrader. Reboot once on purpose and confirm your tool comes back by itself.
Protecting your keys
The server is where your exchange API keys live, so secure it like it matters:
- Strong Administrator password, and lock RDP down — an IP allowlist on a dedicated-IP plan, at minimum a non-obvious setup on NAT. See the hardening section of the RDP guide.
- Least-privilege API keys — trade-only, no withdrawal permission, IP-restricted at the exchange if it supports it. If a key can't withdraw, a compromised box can't drain you.
- The noVNC console is your way back in if you ever lock RDP out — with a Ctrl+Alt+Del button — so you can harden aggressively without fear of being stranded.
What we won't claim
No latency numbers, no "co-located with the exchange," no invented edge. The real, honest benefit is uptime: a strategy that keeps running when your laptop is closed and your home connection drops. That's what a server buys you.
